Welcome to Kindergarten 2
(6 Year olds)
I'm Ms Joyce, and welcome to my class! In this class, the children are highly encouraged to explore and be a constructor of their knowledge. Facilitating is often used in my classroom. Read on to find out more!
6 Year olds are:
The children in this level are more fluent in their literacy and numeracy skills. They are starting to develop more complex thoughts, and is becoming independent (Morin, 2019). Therefore, facilitating them is crucial and the most effective way to help them learn.
Facilitating can take place anywhere and anytime. It means to assist and make the learning process appropriate and possible for the children (Macnaughton & Williams 2009) . It can also be paired up with encouragement, praise, and helping, and also with problem solving. Facilitation also enables me to observe the children as they are in transition from Kindergarten 1 to Kindergarten 2, and eventually moving on to Primary school.
Why facilitating?
Children at the age of 6 is becoming more independent, therefore, it is more effective to let them take control of their own learning, make their own discoveries, and to learn from it. Independency is an essential life skill that is applicable in daily life. Therefore, facilitation enables the teacher to observe and step in only when necessary.
How Facilitation is used in my classroom:
-
Asking open-ended questions
-
Give explicit and instructions
-
Providing a variety of appropriate learning materials for them to use.
-
Listen to them
-
Write down tasks
-
Provide guidance and assist them in their learning
-
Demonstrate
-
Provide examples
-
Recap and Guidance
-
Don't give answers! Work together with them to find answers.
Remember, Observation is also part of facilitating, as constructive feedbacks or tasks are usually given after observing the child’s competence level.
